“Awakening the Sleeping Giant”: 5-HMF as a Promising Bio-Based Platform Chemical for a Sustainable European Industry 🧪🌱
With the launch of the flagship project CERISEA, a groundbreaking European initiative is gaining momentum. Its goal: the safe and sustainable industrial-scale production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). This molecule holds great promise as a platform chemical for diverse applications in the chemical and materials industries—ranging from crop protection agents to biopolymers and plastics—derived from fructose and non-food side streams. 🏭🔬
The project brings together 12 leading European partners from industry and research to:
🔹 overcome key technological challenges in bio-based 5-HMF production
🔹 establish the first European value chain and the world’s first industrial-scale production facility in France
🔹 demonstrate the use of 5-HMF in key applications, including araminolic resins and crop protection products
