HISTORY IN THE CITY CENTRE

At the heart of Linz’s historic centre is the Hauptplatz, one of the largest enclosed squares in Austria. From here, the narrow streets of the old town lead to sights such as the Landhaus, the Old Cathedral and the Schlossmuseum Linz overlooking the city. A short walk away, the Mariendom (New Cathedral), Austria’s largest church, is one of Linz’s most distinctive landmarks.

ART, TECHNOLOGY AND CULTURE

Linz is well known for its strong focus on digital culture and contemporary art. The Ars Electronica Center, directly on the Danube, explores the relationship between art, technology and society. Across the river, the Lentos Art Museum presents modern and contemporary art. Other cultural highlights include the Musiktheater Linz and the large-scale street art of the Mural Harbor.

THE DANUBE AND PÖSTLINGBERG

The Danube is an important part of Linz and offers many opportunities for walking, cycling and spending time by the river. The Donaulände and Donaupark are home to several of the city’s cultural landmarks. For panoramic views over Linz and the surrounding region, take the historic Pöstlingbergbahn from the Hauptplatz to the Pöstlingberg.

INDUSTRY AND INNOVATION

Industry has shaped Linz for generations and remains an important part of the city today. The voestalpine Stahlwelt offers insights into steel production, technology, innovation and the transformation of the steel industry. Together with its universities, research institutions and technology companies, Linz combines a strong industrial tradition with research and innovation.

LOCAL FLAVOURS

No visit to Linz is complete without trying the Linzer Torte, one of the city’s best-known specialities and considered the oldest known cake named after a city. The city centre also offers traditional Austrian restaurants, cafés and contemporary dining options. For a more local experience, the Südbahnhofmarkt offers regional produce, food stalls and a lively market atmosphere.
