Sports buildings represent a massive untapped potential for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects. However, accelerating the rate of sports building renovations requires innovative financing methods. The EU-funded GREENFOOT project will support this process by showcasing how individual engagement can bridge the ‘financing gap’ for professional football buildings. The project will develop and perform a community-based financing concept for renovating stadiums, practice facilities and related buildings according to energy efficiency and renewable energy standards. The concept consists of crowdfunding methods comprising creative investment packages and associated financial contracts that attract fans and community members to invest in the energy transition.
