The Allianz WärmeZukunft (Heat Future Alliance) is Austria’s new innovation lab dedicated to sustainably transforming the heating and cooling sector, actively advancing solutions that are climate-neutral, socially equitable, and economically viable. With this initiative, Austria is setting new benchmarks and reinforcing its role as a European leader in the energy transition for heating and cooling.
As part of the WärmeZukunft Alliance, the Energieinstitut an der JKU Linz serves as the service provider responsible for leading the innovation field “Social, Economic and Legal Innovations.” It is supported in this role by Forschung Burgenland, which acts as co-lead.
The lab specifically integrates technological, social, economic, and regulatory innovations into a holistic, systemic approach. Its innovative power does not lie in any single technology but in the systematic organisation of innovation itself: through the integration of six thematic innovation areas, involvement of internationally recognised Austrian research institutions, and close collaboration with market actors and stakeholders, truly groundbreaking lighthouse projects are made possible. This is complemented by intensive knowledge transfer between research, industry, and society.

At the core of the innovation lab is an adaptive, circular innovation model that continuously captures technological trends, societal needs, and regulatory developments, rapidly translating them into tangible projects. The lab offers a broad spectrum of tailored services, including strategic consulting, feasibility studies, matchmaking events, needs assessments, stakeholder analysis, impact coaching, and support in developing market-ready business models. This significantly lowers market-entry barriers and accelerates the transfer of innovative solutions into real-world practice.
A special focus lies on effectively exploiting and transferring the project’s outcomes to the market. Scalability and practical implementation conditions are systematically considered from the very start of project conception. Intensive collaboration and continuous coordination with all key actors of the innovation ecosystem—including cities and municipalities, regional energy agencies, investors, administration, and policymakers—ensure optimal usability and sustainable integration of results into existing market and funding structures.
Through international networking and cooperation, European innovations are adapted to Austrian conditions. A targeted, systematic impact-coaching and monitoring approach ensures developed solutions have a tangible effect, actively contributing towards climate targets.
The Allianz WärmeZukunft is jointly supported by the Green Energy Lab research initiative and the AEE INTEC research institute. With their extensive expertise in the development of innovative solutions for a sustainable energy system, the organizations form the strong foundation of this forward-looking innovation ecosystem in the heating transition.
