The flagship project ZEUS focuses on the electricity sector and the steel and cement sectors, which are difficult to decarbonize. The aim is the development and cross-sectoral pilot demonstration of a climate-neutral process chain – from the production and conditioning of green hydrogen under fluctuating process conditions to the capture of CO2 from industrial waste gases and conversion into valuable, storable hydrocarbons. To this end, various pilot plants are being researched in an industrial environment (6 MW PEM electrolysis, CO2 capture, catalytic methanation, CO2 electrolysis) and interconnected to form holistic process chains. Through its demonstration character, the flagship project ZEUS aims to accelerate the transfer of climate-friendly technologies into practice and anchor sector coupling sustainably in Austria.
