High-temperature heat pumps and sustainable steam generation

High-temperature heat pumps powered by renewable energy are the most climate-friendly option for industrial steam! The recently published article in pv magazine Global summarizes the results of the study “Life Cycle Assessment and Shadow Cost of Steam produced by an Industrial-Sized High-Temperature Heat Pump” by our colleagues Lukas Zeilerbauer, Stefan Puschnigg, Johannes Lindorfer, and Felix Hubmann from the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology and shows that these innovative technologies not only enable more sustainable steam production, but can also be economically viable under certain conditions.

The study analyses the entire life cycle and the externalized costs of the environmental damage of steam production by an industrial high-temperature heat pump. The results help to deepen the understanding of the energy efficiency and economic benefits of high-temperature heat pumps in industrial applications.
