Start of the Horizon Europe project EUH2STARS

We are very pleased to be an important part of the European consortium of the EUH2STARS research project, which will make Upper Austria the centre of seasonal storage of renewable energies (via hydrogen) in Europe!

In this European reference project, the consortium leader RAG Austria AG, together with LINZ AG, AGGM Austrian Gas Grid Management AG, Axiom, Montanuniversität Leoben and the Energieinstitut an der JKU Linz, is demonstrating for the first time in the Austrian part of the project, using the example of the greater Linz area, how urban centres can safely use the summer sun all year round in winter in the form of green heat and electricity – without any CO2 emissions. As part of the Horizon Europe Framework Programme call for proposals for the investigation and scaling of large-volume underground storage of hydrogen, the EUH2STARS project submitted on Austria’s initiative – together with partners from the Netherlands, Spain and Hungary – was the only project in the call to receive funding.

“Storing energy using hydrogen will be one of the central building blocks of the energy system of the future. As a research institution, we are looking forward to working with our project partners to further develop this system and optimise its implementation,” said Robert Tichler, Managing Director of the Energieinstitut an der JKU Linz.

The project was launched today at a major press conference.
